Blue Microphones are famous for having some high-end studio microphones, with the Yeti being one of their most popular microphones for recording and streaming. Everyone seems to be grabbing Blue microphone for podcasts, video/audio content, voice-overs, and all kinds of audio-recordings, but is it really as good as it’s made out to be?

So let’s review the Blue microphone in detail. We will look at its salient features so you better have an idea of whether you should get one or not.

Blue Yeti Microphone Review

Blue Yeti Microphone

Price

To be honest, one of the things that distinguish the Blue Microphone from others is the price. It’s a lot more affordable than some other high-end microphones that you may not afford easily, especially if you have just started making online content and don’t have a very flexible budget.

You can get Blue Yeti at just over $100, and it’s the best bet within this price range. If you need a more high-quality microphone, it’s going to put more restraint on your budget.

Blue Yeti is also available in different colors. Some of them are even cheaper, so if you are not much concerned about the aesthetic, you can save some more bucks.

Looks

There’s no getting around it, but the Blue Yeti is bulky in size. It’s a big mic with a sturdy look and weighs quite heavy as well.

The size seems intimidating at first. Once you get used to having it around, it’s not a big issue, especially if you are looking for professional voice recordings, as having a bulky microphone should be the least of your concerns.

With that added heft, the Blue Yeti has a very solid base. So, it won’t be drifting away when you are recording and don’t need to make adjustments frequently. You can still use a shock mount for reducing ambient vibrations.

The build of the microphone makes it easy to reach your mouth level.  You can pivot it as well for optimizing the sound quality.  Adjusting the microphone head in the right direction is easy. Remember, you don’t need to speak over the microphone but from the side.

With that said, the Yeti is definitely not portable due to its size, making it a bit inconvenient if you want to carry it along on trips. The mighty Yeti is going to take a lot of room in your backpack.

Other than size, Yeti Blue has a sturdy construction. The metal build microphone has a retro look, and it is available in different colors. So you can choose one that matches your desktop system for an on-camera aesthetics. Its retro look will complement your video recordings as well.

Setup

Blue Yeti USB has an easy setup that you can’t go wrong with. It’s a plug and play microphone, which means you don’t need any drivers. Just connect the USB mic to your Mac or PC’s USB port, and it’s ready to work, as easy as that. The last thing you want to be worried about is setting the mic up with complicated installations while you are going live.

Sound Quality

With its custom “Three-Capsule Array” you can record clear sound with broadcast quality. The Blue Yeti comes equipped with multiple audio pickup patterns that will suffice for any sort of recording. It works well for podcasts, music recording, and anything else you can throw at it.

Blue Yeti monitors your voice in real-time and mixes it with the computer for enhancing sound quality. Whether if you live-streaming, or have people around for a conference call, it renders professional quality to all recordings.

Blue Yeti offers full gain control for making your recordings clearer. Without gain control, you risk introducing buzzing or hissing sounds in the audio recording, or potentially clip the microphone at loud volumes.

Audio Control

The Blue microphone allows you to have full control during recordings; be it the headphone volume, adjusting the gain, or changing modes, you have full control. All buttons are easy to access.

A very convenient control option is the mute button. You can find it right on the microphone from where you can turn off the recording instantly whenever you need to.

It’s helpful when you are recording or going live, and you need to cough or clear your throat a bit. The mute button also has a clear indication to avoid confusion. A red light flashing shows the mute button is on so there is no confusion about when it is on or off.

Other than the mute button, you have the headphone jack in the bottom so you can adjust the voice level while recording. There is a button to adjust the headphone volume as well.

The Blue Yeti is good for all types of recordings with this audio control. Whether you want to record a podcast, voice-overs, commentaries, or live games, you can make use of it for recording any situation, especially since you can connect it to almost anything with it being a USB mic.

Multi-Pattern Sound Selection

The feature we love the most in Blue Yeti is a multi-pattern sound selection. It’s a convenient feature that makes this microphone a good fit for almost any type of recording.

The pattern allows you to record in multiple ways with precision. Whether you are recording your own voice and want to avoid catching noise from sides, or if you have someone in front of you for a duet performance, the Blue Yeti offers different patterns to suit your needs. You can adjust it to any situation with its different recording modes.

Let’s look at each pattern and see what it does:

• Cardioid Mode:
It’s the perfect choice when you are the only speaker. Good for recording commentary, Skype calls, playing instruments, or just having a live streaming session. It will capture voice from the front, ignoring the sides or back, so the sound quality remains clear without any disturbing noise.

• Bidirectional Mode:
The bidirectional pattern covers voice from the front and back, ignoring the sides. So the mode can be helpful when you have two people sitting across each other and recording. It will ignore left and right sounds and record only front and back. It’s a great option for voice-overs, interviews, or any other recording sessions involving two persons.

• Omnidirectional Mode:
Omnidirectional mode picks up voices from all sides. So when you are having a live debate or a conference call, an omnidirectional mode is what you need for picking up voices from all around.

• Stereo Mode:
Stereo mode will pick up the sound from left and right. It gives a more realistic sound aura and is great when you have two persons on both sides, or if you want to create a stereo effect in your recording.

So with these patterns, you can get as creative as you want to with your podcasts, recordings, or live streaming.

Portability

You can fold down the Blue that makes it easy for packing. Still, it’s not a small microphone, so it’s going to take up a lot of space in your bag.

Blue Yeti VS Snowball

If you compare the Blue Yeti to the Blue Snowball, the difference is too stark even to compare. Sure, the Snowball costs way less than Yeti, but it offers far fewer features.

First, it has only one condenser as compared to the three-capsule array of Blue Yeti; then, you don’t have the sound patterns that make your recordings more professional and allow multiple persons to record with ease. The Snowball also lacks any gain control, which might be a feature that you use frequently.

So, the result is the lack of clarity and precision. More importantly, you lose the professional sound quality that you need for podcasts or live streaming or any other kind of content creation that you get in the Blue Yeti.

Final Verdict

So what we understand from this Blue Yeti review is that it’s a fairly priced microphone, offering good features in this range.  If you are buying a cheap microphone, you may not get all the features. The Blue Yeti USB mic has a solid construction, three-array capsule for recording, multiple patterns for recording, full audio, and headphone control. Along with all these key features, it is quite easy to set up as well.

While there are definitely better microphones out there, the Blue Yeti strikes a fine balance between fantastic audio quality, features, and price to make it an easy recommendation for everyone.
